A world where women have access to proper sanitation, safety, and healthcare creates a society and culture where every voice can contribute. We are kidding ourselves if we think the world is running at its full potential if only half of its population can participate in decision-making, where people are held back among their peers because they lack the types of resources that are afforded to developed countries.<\/p>\n<p>If every woman had access to sanitary pads, birth control, inventions to ease the strain of daily activities, and proper birthing and childcare resources, imagine the productive impact that would have on our world as a whole.\u00a0We need all voices.<\/p>\n<p><em>&ldquo;When women and girls are empowered, we\u2019re not just better by half. They are bright, gracious and dedicated women, who see their work as a way to support other women in the community, their children, friends and neighbors. They are the first line of defense against illness across Sega,\u00a0a community of\u00a010,000 residents,\u00a0in Kenya\u2019s rural western region\u00a0where child mortality is the highest in the country. Pamela, Janerose and Consolata are\u00a0only three of Sega\u2019s\u00a017 Community Health Workers who tend to the health of mothers and children.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe community I belong to, it also belongs to me. My patients have a belief that even if their child is sick, I will come with valuable information.\u201d Janerose<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSharing knowledge with the community is my primary goal as a health worker. The training has provided me with plenty of expertise and health knowlegde that I\u2019m happy to share.\u201d Pamela<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe community health training I receive is always appreciated, and that knowledge helps me as I deal with different household illnesses. I\u2019d like to call attention to one woman in particular who not only is making a difference in the lives of many adult women and young ladies in her community, but inspiring females around the world.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>Her name is Yasmine Mustafa, a Kuwaiti refugee from the Persian Gulf War, who at the age of 8 arrived in the US to begin a new life while attempting to distance herself from the atrocities and horrors she personally witnessed. Her mission: to push for equality and respect for all people, especially the underserved.<\/p>\n<p>After working scores of odd jobs to put herself through school, Yasmine graduated summa cum laude with an Entrepreneurship degree from Temple University. After rising to Partner role within a marketing consulting firm, she founded her first startup, a blog advertising company helping writers monetize their content. And after rapidly growing that company, she sold it to a prominent content marketing firm where even more writers could be served.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, Yasmine taught herself all the programming and design skills she needed to build and market her companies - which led her to this question: <em>Why are there so few women in code and design roles<\/em>? What she discovered was that while many women had an interest, the lack of a non-intimidating, supportive environment precluded them from engaging. Yasmine immediately founded the Philadelphia chapter of <a href=\"http:\/\/girldevelopit.com\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Girl Develop It<\/em><\/a>, a non-profit organization focused on providing affordable and accessible programs to women who want to learn software and web development through mentorship and hands-on instruction.<\/p>\n<p>Within three years, GDI Philly has become the fastest growing chapter in the nation, growing over 115% each year with over 2300 members. Countless Philadelphia women have attended GDI workshops and have successfully transitioned into technical \/ design careers - and every one of them profusely credits Yasmine with their success. Yasmine also personally mentored the Executive Director of the national GDI organization - helping ensure the future success of all chapters and the ability to touch many more lives around the country.<\/p>\n<p>After reading about a rape that occurred near her apartment in Philadelphia - a young woman brutally attacked and molested while putting money in her parking meter - Yasmine realized that more could be done with leveraging technology to help empower women in urban environments. And thus she began <a href=\"http:\/\/useroar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>ROAR for Good<\/em><\/a>, a social impact company aimed at diminishing violence against women using technology and educational programs. ROAR combines wearable technology (in the form of women\u2019s jewelry) along with a crowd-sourced web application for helping avert danger. The wearable device is capable of emitting an extremely loud alarm (which can be heard across multiple city blocks) as well a disorienting strobe light for deterring attackers. The web application allows communities of users to report potential areas of danger or street harassment, with GPS-triggered alerts being sent to others entering such \u201chot zones\u201d. Several other features included in the ROAR hardware and software are geared toward further enhancing effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps even more unique is ROAR\u2019s focus of partnering with educational organizations to help teach young men a culture of respect and appreciation. Yasmine\u2019s goal is that one day devices like ROAR are no longer needed and that women can walk confidently and safely down city streets. Furthering its mission, ROAR intends to donate a device to a woman in need for each one purchased. When I have patients with eye health problems, I can screen them and refer them to the health center. Trachoma is a big challenge in this area, but after the training I see change. If I have a case with trachoma, I will teach the patient to clean their face and then I\u2019ll treat them with proper medicine and I can teach the community good hygiene. Since women and older girls are often the caretakers of children they easily can be susceptible to exposure to active trachoma. Prevention is the key the addressing the spread of trachoma and women can lead the charge in this fight. Health Extension Workers (HEW), like Kayola, are empowered through training by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orbis.org\" target=\"_blank\">Orbis <\/a>and the Ethiopian Ministry of Health to play an essential part in trachoma prevention. Working with women\u2019s groups in the local community, Kayola and other health care workers can help spread the word about prevention to perform community outreach and emphasize the importance of face and hand African Rural University for Women, Uganda<\/p>\n<p>An emerging major policy focus for Africa is its increasing capacity to feed itself and become an important player in global food trade. Equally important is the inequality between men and women when it comes to access to land, credit, technology and other agricultural inputs. This is particularly important given the fact that majority of Africa\u2019s farmers are women.<\/p>\n<p>The African Rural University (ARU) was set up in the Kibaale district of western Uganda to address this fact. It addresses the fact that new models are needed to extend higher technical training to women farmers who are the frontline innovators.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --> ARU is a university that focuses on building strong female leaders for careers in agriculture and on involving the community in every step of the agricultural value chain. A key feature of the new university is to help young women envision the future they want and design strategies to achieve their goals. But in many places around the world, making sure women have access to health care before, during, and after giving birth is largely seen as only the concern of women. That\u2019s not the case in Chief Kwataine\u2019s village in Malawi. Through the Safe Motherhood Initiative, Chief Kwataine is making maternal health everyone\u2019s concern.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>In the past, men in Chief Kwataine\u2019s community would never talk about pregnancy or childbirth. Even a woman\u2019s husband often didn\u2019t know much about her health. But Chief Kwataine is changing that and encouraging open dialogue and education about these issues among everyone in his village. I have received threats on numerous occasions while my husband too has been warned of serious consequences and as a result my family wants me to stop working for polio eradication. However, I am and will remain committed to this cause.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>I feel that my role is very important in polio programme because if field workers do not go door to door to vaccinate children the disease wouldn\u2019t be eradicated from Pakistan. Somebody needs to get the job done and I enjoy doing it. She works in the slums of New Dehli, where the state health care institutions are often miles away. She speaks with the women about pregnancy, giving birth, how to care for infants, vaccines and how accidents at home can be prevented.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>Every year 1.7 million children under the age of five die in India. Juhi (25) gives Pawan the credit for her son\u2019s survival. Pawan has supported Juhi through her pregnancy: with checkups at the mobile health clinic and at the hospital when labor stared. It was a caesarean section and Juhi might not have survived without proper help. Pawan is competent at supporting and encouraging mothers like Juhi. And she is very satisfied with every child who grows up. As a high school student, Debbie thought engineers were train conductors, but a math teacher inspired her to pursue an engineering degree at Stanford. She quickly realized that she was one of the only women in her class and one of the only women pursuing a career in engineering, and she wanted to do something to change that.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>Debbie wanted to \u201cdisrupt the pink aisle\u201d and encourage young girls to think of science and engineering as cool and fun. She single handedly educated her siblings, extended family and whoever came to her for help from her meager income as a secondary school teacher.\u00a0 The passion and humility that this former teacher displays while dealing with the vulnerable people always leaves one amazed!!<\/p>\n<p>Her organisation envisions a society where rural women, children and youth are empowered with skills for self reliance and are able to contribute to self and community development.\u00a0 \u00a0What started as a program to cater for teen moms and out of school youth, has led to establishment of the Nyarushanje Community Library and Empowerment Centre. Through Nyarushanje Community Library &amp; Empowerment\u00a0\u00a0 Centre, teen moms, women, and out of school youth have been empowered through the skills development projects. Under this project the program beneficiaries are trained in tailoring and multimedia making, cookery and food hygiene. \u00a0The Community library is used as a centre for knowledge acquisition n as students and the community at large use it to access books, reading space, sports and recreational centre. Her organisation has also reached out to women and girls, in schools, community and household level and sensitized them on menstruation and menstrual management.<\/p>\n<p>Olivia is so passionate about education and through PeerLink Initiative she has encouraged teen moms to go back to school, her organisation provides scholarships to the vulnerable. Volunteering as a teacher in northern Tanzania in 2008, she was disheartened by the number of marginalized girls relying on the fickle kindness of visiting foreigners to sponsor their education.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>Believing that handouts enforce a cycle of dependency, JoAnne left the corporate world in San Francisco, her hometown, behind to put her years of nonprofit management experience and her considerable energy towards designing a program for these girls that develops their skills in entrepreneurship and sustainable agriculture. The NGO that JoAnne founded and runs, Shukuru, helps marginalized girls realize that they are their own solution to obtaining an education as well as economic and social empowerment. And this violence disproportionately affects women and girls, preventing the type of equity our work at the foundation is designed to address.<\/p>\n<p>The authors highlight the need to reform the criminal justice systems in developing countries, identifying responsive law enforcement as a critical component to empowering women and girls. This book not only discusses the types of situations to which poor women and girls are subjected, but highlights the dedicated people who fight for them.
