Better By Half

Women make up half our entire population. When they’re held back, half the world’s potential goes unrealized.
But when women and girls are empowered, we’re not just better by half. The world is twice as good.

When I first met Jane, she was my guide in Kenya and and over the years, she has become a friend and an inspiration to me. Jane grew up in a slum in Kenya. When she was in her early teens, she saw many of her friends get pregnant and have to leave school. Jane was lucky – she had a mentor through her church community who encouraged her to stay in school, comforted her when her sister died of AIDS, and gave her hope for her future.

Now, Jane is paying it forward by giving women and girls in communities like the one she grew up have a community they can go to for support. When I visited one of Jane’s mothers’ groups I was so inspired by the hope each of these women have for their children and the support and encouragement the provided each other under the most difficult of circumstances. Jane’s has taught me that the most powerful resource in poor communities is the women who live there.
